My Bloody Valentine – Loveless (1991)

Shoegazing, Noise Pop, Experimental Rock.

There is so much that can be said about this album that I’m rendered speechless. The blend of sound is the epitome of tension and resolution, noise and melody, intensity and tenderness. Put it on when your mood fits a textured spectrum of reds and blues, or when you want to immerse yourself in a fervent kind of entrancement. The only minuscule misgiving I have that makes the album just short of perfection is its lack of a narrative arc. However, the album is so engaging and cohesive that time flies by and the end comes too quickly. An album that doesn’t have a single “bad” track, the five most memorable songs to me are Only Shallow, To Here Knows When, When You Sleep, I Only Said, and Sometimes. //

clipping. – CLPPNG (2014)

Experimental Hiphop, Industrial Hiphop.

Strong, creative, pounding, experimental beginning with lots of potential; unfortunately, even after multiple listens, my attention wanes after the first three or four tracks. Still, when you’re sick of the same old shit all the time but not ready to go completely wacko, put this on. CLPPNG is at its best on the track Body & Blood, and though the first minute and a half of Get Up is damn good, the song disappointingly does not develop. For me, this track and a half is what’s holding up my rating of the album. //

Kendrick Lamar – DAMN. (2017)

Rap, Hiphop.

Smart remarks and thoughtful self-analysis and societal commentary, sounds like integrating complex thoughts about the world around us. Put it on when you just want to listen to solid beats and rhymes, or, shifting your attention to the lyrics, when you find yourself processing thoughts about anything. //

Thee Oh Sees – Floating Coffin (2013)

Garage Rock, Psychedelic Rock.

With such maximal diversity of sound (warm and cold, loud and quiet, rhythms and melodies), I hear the broadest range of colours and flavours on this album. Put it on on a sunny day, or when you want to feel ambitious and grounded. //

Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes (2008)

Indie Folk, Rock, Pop.

Intricate, expansive and wistful; with so many great details, sounds like life ain’t so bad. Put it on when you’re winding down from a long day, or when you’re feeling contemplative. //

Radiohead – Pablo Honey (1993)

Alternative Rock.

A feat of a music career when this album is likely their least interesting album, the good stuff is in the sounds of self-consciousness and self-doubt. Put it on when you need a reminder that the best is yet to come. // June 10, 2017

Grimes – Visions (2012)

Synthpop, Dream Pop, Art Pop, Experimental.

The sound of weird, complicated, deep emotions finding expression; it’s strange, intoxicating, and satisfying. Put it on when you’re in a quirky, neutral-to-happy mood, wanting some unconventional but upbeat, catchy hooks. //
